BERLIN — Jericho Mountain State Park is getting a new bathhouse/shower building for the campground and day use areas.
Executive Councilor Joseph Kenney announced that the executive council last week approved awarding the $572,000 contract for the building to Ray’s Electric Inc., of Berlin.

The existing bathhouse at the park has deteriorated to the point that it can not be used. 

 

Amy Bassett, spokeswoman for N.H. Parks and Recreation, said shower and bathroom facilities are the number one amenity visitors cite as missing at the park. “Many have commented that they would love to come again but would not until bathroom and shower facilities were available,” she said, in an email.

Bassett said work tearing down the old building should begin next week. The goal is to have the new bathhouse open for next year’s camping season.

“This is great news for the park and it will add so much for campers and beach goers. This is the most needed amenity at the park today and we are very excited that it is finally happening,” she said.

The new facility will be 1,472 square feet and include toilets, showers, changing stalls, laundry facilities, a family bathroom, and a small store to sell drinks and ice cream. The main store will remain in the visitor center.

Two companies, Ray’s Electric and A.R. Couture Construction Corp., both of Berlin, submitted bids. At $622,000 Couture’s bid was higher and Ray’s Electric was determined the low bidder. Both bidders exceeded the $521,000 estimate but it was noted that the remote location of the site was a factor in the higher bids.

In addition, the executive council approved $22,500 for oversight and engineering services and $22,500 for engineering services to the state Bureau of Public Works Design and Construction to bring the total project cost to $617,000. Half of the cost will come from federal funds.

The park has 20 primitive campsites including five cabins, four tent sites, two lean-to sites and nine RV sites. There is also a day use beach area on Jericho Lake and a boat launch. The park is known for its 75 miles of ATV trails plus a new 4x4 off road trail.
